The Illusion of Custody
The core promise of decentralized finance is self-custody. If an asset sits inside your private wallet, nobody should be able to touch it without your cryptographic signature. You verify that the mint authority is revoked, purchase your tokens on Raydium, and watch the chart climb.
Then, without warning, your balance drops to zero. You check Solscan in disbelief. There is no transaction signed by your key, yet your tokens were transferred to an unknown wallet and dumped on the market. You have encountered one of the most insidious threats on Solana: the Permanent Delegate Exploit.
What is a Permanent Delegate?
Under the classic SPL token standard, third-party delegation required an explicit approval transaction from the wallet owner. The Token-2022 program introduced protocol-level extensions, including the Permanent Delegate extension.
When this extension is initialized on a token mint, a specific master address is granted permanent, irrevocable authority over every token account holding that asset. This delegate can:
- Transfer Any Balance: Move tokens out of your wallet to any destination address at will.
- Burn Tokens Remotely: Destroy tokens held in your personal account without permission.
- Bypass User Signatures: Execute transactions entirely through the delegate's private key, bypassing your wallet approval completely.
How Scammers Exploit the Extension
Scammers deploy a Token-2022 meme coin with the Permanent Delegate extension assigned to their personal wallet. To retail investors, the token looks legitimate. Liquidity is added, trades execute smoothly, and trading volume rises.
Once holders accumulate significant token balances, the developer invokes their permanent delegate authority. In a series of automated transactions, they seize the tokens directly from top holders' wallets, transfer them to the developer address, and dump them into the Raydium liquidity pool. Victims watch their holdings vanish into thin air.
Auditing Protocol Extensions with RugPullShield
Because Permanent Delegate logic operates at the mint definition layer rather than standard wallet approvals, standard wallet warnings never trigger. Protection requires deep on-chain static analysis.
RugPullShield inspects the full extension byte array of every Token-2022 contract. Our scanner immediately detects whether a Permanent Delegate is present, identifies the designated controller address, and evaluates whether the authority can be abused. If any unrevoked delegate power exists, RugPullShield issues a critical danger alert, shielding your capital from silent wallet hijacking.
