The Fake DEX Exploit: Phishing Frontends and Malicious RPCs

October 27, 2026  ·  RugPullShield
You clicked a search ad for Raydium and opened an identical swap interface. When you confirmed your swap, your wallet was cleaned out. Learn how phishing frontends hijack transactions.

The Counterfeit Trading Desk

In decentralized finance, security advice usually centers on auditing smart contracts. Traders verify that mint authorities are revoked, liquidity is locked, and top holders own safe percentages. Yet thousands of cautious traders still lose their entire portfolios each month without ever interacting with a malicious token contract.

Their mistake was not the token they bought. Their mistake was the website they used to buy it. Welcome to the Fake DEX Exploit.

How Cloned Frontends Deceive Traders

Scammers purchase sponsored Google Ads that rank directly above organic search results for queries like "Raydium DEX", "Jupiter Swap", or "Phantom Web". The malicious links use subtle homoglyphs or lookalike domains such as raydium-app.io or jup-trade.org.

When you land on the page, the user interface is a pixel-perfect clone of the legitimate trading platform. The logos, candlestick charts, and swap inputs look 100% authentic. The trap lies completely beneath the surface:

  1. Malicious RPC Injection: Legitimate decentralized applications connect to trusted public or private Solana RPC endpoints. The cloned frontend connects your wallet session to a rogue, attacker-controlled RPC node.
  2. Transaction Payload Rewriting: When you enter a swap to trade 2 SOL for a meme coin, the frontend does not construct a Raydium swap instruction. Instead, the malicious backend injects an asset transfer instruction that sweeps your native SOL and SPL tokens directly into the scammer's wallet.
  3. Masked Simulation Popups: By manipulating transaction metadata and compute unit limits, the malicious script attempts to bypass or obscure Phantom's transaction simulation warnings, making the outgoing drain look like a standard pool swap.
