Liquidity Locking: Why Duration Matters

October 12, 2026  ·  RugPullShield
Seeing "LP Locked" on a DEX is not enough. Scammers lock liquidity for only 24 hours to create a false sense of security. Learn how to verify lock duration.

The False Sense of Security

When assessing a new Solana token, one of the first safety checks traders look for is whether the liquidity pool is locked. Scammers know this, and they have adapted their strategy accordingly. Instead of launching with unlocked liquidity, they proudly advertise that their LP is locked on a recognized platform.

Unsuspecting buyers see the lock badge on DexScreener, assume the project is rug-proof, and buy in. What they failed to inspect was the unlock timer.

The 24-Hour Lock Trap

A liquidity lock is only as safe as its duration. Consider how the scam works:

  1. The Launch: The developer deposits SOL into the liquidity pool and locks the LP tokens using a locking contract.
  2. The Short Timer: Instead of locking for 6 months or 1 year, the developer sets the lock duration to 24 or 48 hours.
  3. The Hype Cycle: The developer promotes the token heavily during the initial lock window. Buyers feel protected by the lock badge and bid the market cap up.
  4. The Expiration: The moment the timer hits zero, the developer unlocks the LP tokens, withdraws all the SOL from Raydium, and disappears.

The chart crashes to zero in a single transaction. The lock did not prevent the rug pull. It merely scheduled it.

Burned vs Locked

In the Solana meme coin ecosystem, burning liquidity is almost always superior to locking it. When LP tokens are sent to an incinerator address, they are destroyed permanently. There is no timer, no unlocking key, and no scenario where the developer can ever reclaim the pool.

If liquidity is locked rather than burned, you must verify the duration before putting your capital at risk.

Automated Lock Analysis

Manually decoding locking contracts and tracking timestamp expirations on Solana block explorers is tedious. RugPullShield automates this inspection instantly.

Our scanner does not just check whether liquidity is locked. It inspects the precise unlock timestamp, calculates the remaining duration, and evaluates whether the lock provider is legitimate. If a lock expires in less than 30 days, RugPullShield flags the token with an immediate warning so you never get caught in a timed rug.
